| DIU
: The small ex-Portugese island of Diu
is a perfect escape from modern India.
IN fact,it is hardly like India from
any dimension-looks like a displaced
Greek island.The clean,cobbled streets,the
pastel houses,the catholic churches
and the old bastioned fort, the colorful
fishwives in the elegant market square
and the sleepy ,relaxed atmosphere-eyeryhting
about Diu is pleasantly Mediterranean.
It offers some marvelous beaches. A
guided tour of Diu fort-Ancient Diu
Church-Ruined Churches-St.Paul's Church
are major attrections.Beaches are in
area NAGOA-AHMEDPUR MANDVI. |

SOMNATH:
is famous in the world for its
Somnath temple.By the 6th century
AD,Somnath was the richest temple
in all India. its wealth was so
great that when the acquisitive
Mehmud of ghazni descended on

of elephants ,camels and mules
couldn't take it away.What he
destroyed was probably the first
historically recorded version
of the temple, built in the 1st
century Ad.Over the following
700 years,Somnath Temple was built
up, knocked down,and rebuilt.Finally,after
Aurangzeb the |
Mughal
iconoclast set his demolition team on
it in 1706,the builders gave up and
left it in ruins. For comfort visit this
legend between November-February.
