ART & CRAFT

Rajasthan offers a breathtaking variety of art & craft that make it a distinct place. It can be divided into these parts.....

Mt.Abu & Pushkar : Situated at 1720 m above sea level ,Mt. Abu is favorite place among foreigners as it is one and only hill resort of Rajasthan . Mt. Abu's history goes back to thousands of years back, according to religious books. The aravli range is complex mixture of rocks. Pushkar is a small hamlet, few kms. from here and very popular for its festival in February when livestock is sold and purchased in tented colonies and lot of tribal dances and music is on display. One can look into life of a commoner here which reflects true sense of Rajasthan. Otherwise westernization has effected large cities where you can find English speaking youngsters-trying to start a conversation alike all Indians who are very impressed and crazy about Europe. Do keep in mind while shopping that you are a walking dollar for them. So,bargaining in every thing you purchase except in large departmental stores, is allowed and must.

Jaipur & Bikaner: Both cities in true sense are a saga of heroic past of Rajasthan. There are numerous palaces and forts which are amazing in architecture point of view. A spectacular show of craftsmanship will be engraved on your mind. There are hundreds of buildings and palaces to mention ,which will consume large portion of this section. Famous places -not to miss are "Jantar Mantar" .

Udaipur: It is a beautiful city at 577 m. The city of 'sunrise' ,The legendary Ranas of Mewar who self-consciously traced their proud ancestry back to 'sun', first held sway over the region from 7th century stronghold, the great fort of Chittaurgarh. IN 1586 ,Maharaja Udai Singh founded a new capital on the shores of lake Pichola and named it Udaipur. The famous personality of ancient rajasthan who effected courage and history of even modern India are, Maharana Pratap.

Had it not been internal feuds and fight for supremacy among rulers of rajasthan, history of India would have been very different. Udaipur is traditionally well planned wall city. With a fort and palace and many building worth a visit / a photograph as its a city (state) of architectural monuments. Do not forget to witness sun rise here as its soul refreshing site and many people stay here just for a ultimate catch of "a' photograph which no doubt is , worth a stay. * Do plan a visit to AHAR, just 3 kms from the city-its a remains of ancient city which was abandoned due to security reasons.Main excursions from Udaipur which are worth a visit are : Monsoon Palace, Kumbhalgarh, Nagda,

Jodhpur: At just 216 m , this is one of the favorites among visitors. The city was one of the walled city as most cities of Rajasthan are, but modernization had effected growth of constructions and now sometimes hard to acknowledge old walls. It was built on main route of Delhi-Gujrat trade route. And this city did grow in business as opium, silk, copper were traded here. Although with passage of time it become major strategic point which every ruler wants to capture. Thus it also witnessed lot of bravery and chivalry of proud clans of Rajasthan. Important excursion worth a visit are: Raikabagh, Ratnada Palace ,Mahamandir, Fort of Meherangarh.

Bikaner: At 237 m, it is soon becoming very popular due to roads and trains available from almost every city of Rajasthan. It is fourth largest town of Rajasthan-built in 1488 by Bhika who was sixth son of Rao Jodha ,the founder of Jaipur. It was a important staging post on the caravanroute west. The impressive fort is the town's principal feature but like Jaisalmer to the "S", many of the houses within the separate old city area have very fine stone carvings. This area is chiefly agricultural and a fine wool is obtained from its sheep. Places worth a visit: Junagarh fort, Karan Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Anup Mahal, Bhand Sagar (5 Kms.), Devi Kund(8 Kms.), Gajner wildlife sanctuary ,

Jaisalmer: At 793 m, its Mecca of golden sandstone monuments. With its narrow streets, heavily carved buildings-it gives a feeling of medieval era. It was a gateway to trade route through infamous "Thar" desert which had colored rajasthan life in many many ways. Jaisalmer was stronghold of trade to Afganistan-Iran through to the Ganga valley. Once on the steps of being forgotten by Indians as trade was effected in early 1900's and very soon it ends up in 1947 when India got freedom from British. Jaisalmer come to life of modernization with well built railways and road netwrok-all due to two wars with Pakistan. Due to its strategic importance Indian army built a very impressive network of communication and travel and now there are only two main features of Jaisalmer life....Army and Tourism. With more and more people visiting to witness- magnificent buildings and forts, economy and life is changing very fast!!
